The giant udang galah (freshwater prawns)…that we also had on her birthday and I loved it so so much, a lot more than the lobster that we had that night and lining the side of the platter were these birthday eggs…served with some very nice special sauce.

We also ordered the lamb with lime sauce…and I only found out that night that they had mayonnaise in it with the lime. It was nice but I think it was nicer when we had it before – the meat was not grilled that well enough.

I saw these balitongs (siput sudut) masak lemak (cooked with santan/coconut milk) and I sure enjoyed them so much when we were here for their buka puasa buffet around the end of May so of course, I could not resist asking for that…and also a helping of the prawns.

My girl wanted their murtabak daging (beef)…and yes, she enjoyed it very much except that for reasons unknown, it was so very big! She could not finish it all so she had it packed to be eaten later at her quarters.

Ordered their famous sweet and sour fish. This is o chio (ikan bawal hitam) for RM 26. It’s a pretty good sized fish and it’s been deep fried so all the bones and fins are edible. I love their sweet and sour sauce too

We should have stopped there but I saw they had ladies’ fingers and I asked for that too, fried with sambal hay bee/udang kering (dried prawns)…and it was really good – I am pretty sure we would want to order that again the next time we drop by.

My girl wanted the pasta al nero di seppia, the one with squid ink (RM24.00)…for what she called “the smell of the sea”. Yes, we all agreed that it was very nice, despite the colour and no, there was no unpleasant “chou chor” or fishy smell. I sure would not mind having that again the next time we drop by here. As a matter of fact, among the customers who came in after us, there was a big group and they too asked for the same. It sure is rather popular, it seems.

I also ordered their seafood pasta aglio olio (RM28.00)…and yes, this was very good, very generous with the herbs used and that gave it a really nice fragrance and flavour. They use their own-made pasta here – I always see them sharing the photographs on their Facebook page and it looked like there were two types in what we had – yellow and green…

We ordered the Ceasar salad (RM18.00)…to share and the moment it was served, my girl remarked that the egg would surely get my nod of approval. Indeed, I was delighted to see the soft, runny yolk. Perfegg!!!

We love their beef pies a lot so I ordered one (RM9.00)…to share for the simple reason that we all had our own individual orders and yes, it was, as always, very nice. I do wish though that they would do something about the presentation, some lettuce and cherry tomatoes by the side or a couple of slices of tomato and cucumber perhaps to give it a bit of colour, if nothing else, instead of serving it on its own just like that…and they could have used a smaller plate, a saucer perhaps – the pie is not that big!

Their braised beef short ribs (RM26.00)…which was very nice, very tasty with the delightful mushroom gravy but though it wasn’t tough, quite tender, in fact, it was not fall-off-the-bone. I certainly would love it a lot more if it had been so. Probably it was because we were early, soon after they opened for the day, and I had to wait a VERY long time for the dish to be served. It probably would have been nicer if they had cooked it a little bit longer.

The rice was not lemak, only very slightly and the salted fish was like it had been fried a long time ago… The sambal was all right, thankfully as it did help make the rice more palatable to some extent and the fried chicken was…like fried chicken.

I asked for a recommendation and they unreservedly told me the Fish Fillet Burger with Egg and Cheese (RM 3.90) was their bestseller. This actually tasted pretty good! I liked the crunchy fish fillet and the creamy egg with the pillowy soft chu nu miang. Nice!

She had her favourite sambal fried kway teow here…with a special request for it to be extra spicy, of course and I ordered the same for my girl but I asked for it to be fried “white” or without soy sauce, that is…She did not seem to enjoy it so much though and was struggling with it and in the end, I think she barely finished half of it. I did try a bit and I thought it was all right just that it was not quite the same – I guess we are more used to having soy sauce in our char kway teow and would prefer it that way.

The kampua mee was in a bigger bowl and the soup…came in an even bigger one, not the usual aluminium bowl that was somewhat small. I sure enjoyed both the noodles and the thick and rich soup with a whole lot of meat, beef tripe and beef tendon in it.

We also had this pork belly marinated with Korean red chili paste, the gochujang (고추장)…and ate it that same way too. I would say that it was just as nice and we sure would not mind ordering that again the next time we drop by here.

Well, the kampua mee (RM3.00)…was all right, not so strong on the garlic taste anymore, probably because of the quality of garlic these days and he added a bit of daun sup (Chinese celery) to the noodles and the soup and I liked that – the added fragrance brought the taste to a whole new level. However, I did not like how he cut the meat into long strips like that. I prefer how they usually do it – in thin broader slices.

We enjoyed the fried kway teow from the Melanau/Muslim stall right next to the kampua mee stall in the coffee shop so I went and ordered the special (RM5.50)…and for that, I got one fried egg and one chicken wing. Other than the fact that both of them seemed rather small, the egg wasn’t exactly fried the way I would like it but on the whole, it…was all right.

Their mee pok seemed very much smaller, half the width of the regular ones…All in all, I would just say it was all right, not anything that would get me going back there for more…and at the price they charge for it, RM5.00 a bowl, I can easily go for two plates of our kampua mee at some places around town.

I did suggest to them that should they happen to come here, they must order the drunken prawns…with those giant freshwater big-head prawns/udang galah but it looked like it fell on deaf ears. I had that once and I enjoyed it a lot but of course, that dish would not come cheap, not with those killer prawns!
