I had their curry lamb rice (RM20.90)……which was all right as well. Their lamb curry…that took a long time coming, for reasons unknown, was nicer than what I had the other day but they certainly were not very generous with the meat and it was not spicy at all. I was thinking of the very much nicer authentic North Indian mutton biryani here the whole time for just 10 sen more, RM21.00 and the biryani rice is anytime a lot nicer than the plain rice with a sprinkling of fried shallots or whatever on top…or the just-as-nice Bangladeshi lamb curry (RM19.00 only with rice) here. The brinjal fritters and the onion rings failed to save the day – I remember enjoying the rice sets here (RM16.90) and what they have by the side there a whole lot more.

Mee mamak (RM6.00)…from another stall there and yes, it was good but I did not think there was anything that would put it a cut above the rest elsewhere in town. I guess it was pricier, RM6.00, mind you, because of the prawns and though they were nice and fresh, I am not all that fond of these supposedly cheaper hard shell ones.

The nasi kerabu lamb chop (RM15.90)…sounded interesting so I decided to order that to try. They do have daging bakar with their nasi kerabu here but I have never ordered that there, only their ayam percik or fish, depending on the day of the week but these days, they have it only on Saturdays. To give credit where credit is due, the lamb…was very very nice, so nice that I only ate a few of the pieces and gave the rest to my girl to enjoy – she loves lamb as much as she loves her potatoes. Other than that, it was nothing like nasi kerabu

The noodles came – this…kampua mee kosong with black soy sauce. Now, we never said we wanted it black. I am no fan of it black as the strong taste of the soy sauce would be overpowering and it would drown out the nice subtle taste of really good kampua mee.

I decided to throw caution to the wind and order the butter prawns (RM20.00)…as we had not had that for a while now. Usually, we would go for the creamy or butter scotch or honey “prawn balls” – prawns without head or shell, all curled up into a ball after cooking as it seemed to be cheaper that way. I expected whole prawns like the ones we had that evening to cost a hand or a foot but it did not turn out to be very expensive, after all and of course, the best part would be the fact that they did it really well. The buttery fibrous egg topping was perfectly done and we sure enjoyed this dish very much.

I particularly enjoyed their midin, fried with belacan (dried prawn paste),,,The belacan they use at such places makes a world of difference – I guess they will not use the super-expensive super-nice Bintulu belacan but as long as it does not have an unpleasant smell and tastes fine, I am ok with it. I particularly loved the gravy with the rice.

The laksa broth…was nice, a bit on the mild side but I could detect a light hint of the ketumbar (coriander) in it and I liked that. Other than that, I was glad that it was not all santan, not overly lemak like some here and true Sarawak/Kuching laksa connoisseurs would frown at the sight of it and declare that it should not be like that as it is not supposed to be like…curry!

Their braised pork rice (RM5.00)…Of course I wasted no time at all in ordering that and yes, it was very nice – very generous with the pork…and there was one whole hard-boiled egg by the side. I certainly would much sooner go for this than what I had here for a ringgit more and no egg.

I ordered their fried noodles, moon and sat there and waited. Boy! For reasons unknown, it sure took a mighty long time like that time when I was there for the kampua mee and when it was served…I must say that I was quite disappointed. It sure did not look all that enticing. However, when I tried it, I thought it was quite good…but for RM4.50 a plate, I sure wouldn’t mind a few thin slices of their char siew or roast meat. This place is famous for those or perhaps I was too early in the morning and they were not ready yet – the cabinet at the stall designated for those was still empty

I bought this pack of nasi lemak (RM3.50)…to try but like the one I had the other day, it was not lemak (rich in santan/coconut milk) at all and despite the tint of green, I could not detect the hint of pandan in the rice. The sambal was nice, though not spicy at all, and there was a salted fish…in place of the regular fried ikan bilis (dried anchovies) and together with the (albeit overcooked) egg, it was all right, just that you would not catch me buying that a second time.

I was quite sure we had their Guiness stout pork…before but we decided we would have a go at it again. Much to our delight, it was very nice – the sauce went so well with the rice but I was not all that fond of the melamine plate it was served in. Well, at least, it wasn’t the coloured or floral ones where the colour may come off eventually like those fake banana leaf plates.

Niang Jia mee sua & egg and red wine Yes, it was so nice and so very fragrant with their own-made traditional Foochow red wine and ginger that everyone dropping by would exclaim, “Wahhh!!! Hern siang! (So fragrant/smells so good!)” the moment they entered. It was VERY red though, quite unlike the clear orange/reddish ones that we are used to…and they got the mee sua by special order from Bintangor, double the price of the usual ones we get around here but we felt the taste and texture required a little bit of getting used to.

The serving was not very big, maybe enough for two together with another dish or two – my girl said she wouldn’t mind dropping by here and order this dish and eat it all by herself, like how people go for a plate of noodles or whatever elsewhere.
