Those who are in the know would order their home-made Lor Bak (5-spiced meat wrap). Though the 5-spice factor was not too bold but the texture was meatily-satisfying. It uses cut-meat instead of minced version so it has a more pleasing bite

Heng's Grilled Stingray carries a distinctive smokiness to it, definitely bolder as compared to others. The sauce gives it an appetizing dimension backed with a gentle spicy kick. For light starter, go for the blanched Baby Octopus, satisfyingly crunchy but dangerously addictive. Equally try-worthy is the signature Grilled Brinjal.... lusciously creamy Brinjal topped with smoky, spiced home-made sauce.

The Stir Fried Noodles and Sweet and Sour Chicken were equally delicious though; the former dish was expertly cooked with the alluring Wok Hei while the latter dish was nicely executed- the Chicken was crisp and the sauce paired perfectly well with the Chicken. There were some hits and misses but generally, a pretty decent Chinese restaurant.

It's no secret that Butterworth is home to a few good restaurants that serve delicious Poached Chicken and one of the oldest names in this "expertise" is May Fong Restaurant at Kampung Benggali, Butterworth. It's impossible to miss the place during lunch hours, the place is often thronged with regular patrons especially during weekends. Families bringing the old and young is a common sight here, it is possibly the de-facto dining place for those living in the neighborhood. The menu is small here, in fact, only Poached Chicken and Wan Ton.... with Rice or Ipoh-styled Hor Fun (with add-ons like blanched Sprouts or Vegetables) but more than enough to entice the crowd. The best time to visit would be around 11 am or expect to wait for at least half an hour before your orders are served.

Classic soup bases like Pig Bone Soup and Tom Yum are available with a few exquisite and innovative offering for the adventurous, worth-mentioning are Milk Cheese Soup, Green Spicy Soup, Spicy Milk Soup etc. Soup bases aside, Tu Go Liang stands out in terms of the variety of steamboat offering; notable highlights include their home-made Yong Tofu, various types of Fish and Meat Balls, vegetables, meat and seafood. Try their Energy Black Sesame Paste , served hot, the thick and rich dessert managed to wow me. It may seem deceptively simple and ordinary but believe me, the flavor was robust, with its velvety smooth texture, it just slides down the throat in a jiffy, leaving a very strong but delightful after-taste in the palate. It was not sweet, with a hint of natural bitterness from the toasted Sesame seeds. Yes, it was that good,

When the bowl of rice is served in front of you, you can practically see the glittering surface of the pork glazed by the rich sauces. Noodles are deeply rooted in our culinary consciousness, there is no one size fits all. There are a lot of varieties on offer and they can come in different size, color, shape, texture as well as flavor. Typically, Pan Mee (a type of Hakka Noodles) is served in the shape of thin, round and smooth texture but Ah Ma Pan Mee, a newly opened Pan Mee specialist at 4th Street Club (Tye Sin Street) decides to do things differently. Using traditional recipe from Pahang, the noodle joint offers Pan Mee in its own style. While the soup bases and condiments are similar, the noodles stand out. They come in irregularly fat-round shape with al-dente (slightly chewy and bouncy) texture. The menu is not big but the air-conditioned restaurant offers a comfortable dining space for hungry diners to have a quick fix; definitely a place where fans of Pan Mee should check out.

One of the easiest ways to find good local eats is to follow the crowd, especially when the place is tucked in the residential neighborhood or off the track. We were succumbed to the large and seemingly inviting facade of Jia Shi Restaurant (家式饭店). The Chinese restaurant at Lembah Permai has never failed to attract a great crowd especially during weekends; the menu is huge and has everything that suits all age groups. The heat-intolerant can opt to dine-in at the fully air-conditioned room while those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance could opt to sit at the al-fresco dining area, facing the serene green park. The service is brisk and prices are reasonable, we'd definitely love to return more- be it a casual family dinner or for a special occasion (with the family).

One of the dish that we miss the most from Taiwan would be their Minced Pork Rice. Feed Me Love's Hot Pot series would satisfy any big eaters, the serving portion is huge with a basket of Hot Pot ingredients as well as a bowl of White Rice. Tea Hall (堂茶茶艺馆) is a time-honored restaurant that has been around for years... most of its businesses are by referral, the place sees constant gathering by a group of Chinese Tea-aficionados. Tummy-filler was their signature Dong Bei Noodles, served with Minced Pork and crunchy diced Cucumber. The real soul to the dish was the Minced Pork- delicately seasoned right on the dot while the noodles were carefully cooked to the right texture. The Cucumber on the other hand, introduced another crunchy-juicy dimension to the dish; even better to go with their smoky Chili paste. We ended the meal with a memorable sweet treat- Sesame Bun. The Bun was served to us scorching hot; apply pressure and you will find the molten Sesame filling oozes out from the bun. The crust was nicely done- thin with a tawny crisp while the filling was carefully sweetened; it was jaw-droppingly good.
