The yong tau foo is nice, with several must try items (e.g. fish filled long beans and sar kok liew) not found in Singapore or Johor. Eating with locals under a big tree is a charming authentic foodie experience.

Most of the yong tau fu we had were decent but not really outstanding. The only item that was special enough to be memorable was the ‘sar kot’ (stuffed turnip) – mainly because it was my first time having it, and we don’t get this in KL. But then again, I get comments saying there are plenty of other places that make tastier ‘sar kot’.

If you are the stereotypical type of people thinking to eat Dim Sum whenever you are visiting Ipoh, try Chef Fatt's place next time, at least for a change. The Dim Sum restaurant is a stone's throw distance away from the famous establishments of Foh San, Ming Court and Yoke Fook Moon Restaurant. Stepping in the place feels like you are visiting a Cha Chan Teng (Hong Kong-styled cafe) in Hong Kong- closely arranged tables and chairs, nostalgic wall tiles, slippery floor tiles and classic Chinese restaurant setting. Once you are seated, you will be approached by the ladies offering trays of piping hot Dim Sum dishes and recommended some signature dishes or best sellers of theirs. It feels like dining in an intimate space in the neighborhood; pretty decent quality and reasonably priced, a good alternative to those bigger establishments.

Reluctantly change plan to Foh San Dim Sum with a not so happy mood. We already know that despite being a highly-mentioned restaurant, the not-so-good comments they have are a lot too. Established since 1971, this award-winning restaurant is undeniably one of the first few eateries that will cross the mind of many when asked “what to eat in Ipoh for breakfast”. Both the Chicken Chop and Pork Chop comes in a Tomato based gravy and with some onions, peas and fried potatoes. The meat cut was huge for both and the price of RM 12 was definitely cheap. The meat was very tender and both were coated in eggs. The flavours were generally quite light and that's good as the sauce did not overpower the natural flavours of the meat. Definitely a place that is worth visiting for Hainanese food when you're in Ipoh.

We tried two out of their six options: ‘Jin Hiong Mai’ (煎香米) and ‘Chao Kap Dai’ (炒及底) @ RM5 and RM5.50 respectively. The crowd’s favorite – ‘Jin Hiong Mai’ is a fried vermicelli noodle dish with gravy, while ‘Chao Kap Dai’ is a fried noodle with all the ingredients available at their stall such as pork slices, prawns and fish cakes. We had the Cantonese Fried Noodles in Egg Gravy and the Fried Yellow Noodles and Kuey Teow with Soy Sauce. Both noodles are equally good and there is a secret ingredient to it – Fresh Prawn Broth. This secret ingredient is what makes the locals willing to wait for at least 45 minutes to an hour for their fried noodles.
