The Brown Marbled Grouper is one of the most-ordered dishes, we had ours steamed and served with premium Soy sauce. The fish was fresh with the most delicate flesh, the texture was addictively bouncy with a hint of seafood sweetness. It was good but could be better if it was served to us piping hot (did not come as hot as expected). The Octopus was alright, though we were a little underwhelmed with the portion and price, we thought the special sauce blended well with the Seafood (the winning factor was the subtle sweetness with a mild heat). If Rice is too mainstream, go for their Singaporean Bee Hoon. For Rm 5, we thought the portion was rather generous and the noodles were expertly cooked (and seasoned). Though there were some hits and misses, we were generally pleased with the food quality.

Leong Hee Seafood (龙禧海鲜小馆) is a proud Penang brand that stands the test of time, established in the 70's, Leong Hee specializes in catering services (wedding or occasions); the extended branch at Paya Terubong is well-received by the residents living nearby. Like most Chu Char places in Penang, it offers quite an extensive local Chinese delights but at unbeatable prices. The place is often full on weekends and the regular patrons would make their reservation in advance so if you have something particular in mind, it is suggested that you make advance reservation to beat the queue too. Dining out in a proper restaurant might not necessary be too grueling to the wallet, at least for the case of James Foo Western Food. The long-established name is known to every Penangite for its great dining deals and its strength to serve localized Western food. While the place does not feel as "fancy" as compared to some of the newly established cafes in town, some of the dishes taste equally good, but at discounted rates. The Western-food focused menu has since expanded from the locals' favorites (of Chicken Chop, Fish N Chips) to a vast selection of International fusion dishes, at very competitive prices.

Wang Thai at All Seasons Place has been serving up Thai food for the residents in the neighborhood for quite some time but recently, there's a stiff competition for Thai food, particularly within the commercial building of All Seasons Place. The new addition- Chang Thai Restaurant is the new venture behind Tomyummy Noodle House. It has plenty of Thai-influenced dishes to offer- from Kerabu to Fried Fritters, Tom Yum, Seafood and classic stir fry dishes. But prices are on the higher side and the food quality is merely passable-satisfactory.

The well-received help-yourself concept of Tom Yum is being taken to a different level at Super One Pot Restaurant, Bukit Bendera; it plays a brilliant bet on food presentation. The name might have suggested how... all self-picked ingredients are cooked then served in a small pot... individually. But that's all we reckon, variety is pretty standard-average here (with reasonable prices), with one or two special add ons such as Lor Bak, Pork Chop and Grilled Shrimps. If I must recommend one item, it would be their fiery hot Tom Yum. To find Super One Pot Restaurant, drive along Jalan Bukit Bendera, before reaching to the cable car station, Super Ont Pot Restaurant is on your right (beside the entrance to the Jade Emperor God Temple (天公坛).

The Pad Thai Seafood (RM 8.90) was impressive. It shares almost 70% similarities with the Pad Thai we had in Bangkok and the heat component was no joke. It put our mouth on fire and we had to take small pauses in between to give some resting period for our tongue.

The 3-flavored Black Pomfret did not impress us from the appearance but it was in fact, skillfully cooked. What better way to warm your bodies and stuff yourself with tasty food other than having Steamboat (Hot Pot)? Classic soup bases like Pig Bone Soup and Tom Yum are available with a few exquisite and innovative offering for the adventurous, worth-mentioning are Milk Cheese Soup, Green Spicy Soup, Spicy Milk Soup etc. Soup bases aside, Tu Go Liang stands out in terms of the variety of steamboat offering; notable highlights include their home-made Yong Tofu, various types of Fish and Meat Balls, vegetables, meat and seafood. One of the easiest ways to find good local eats is to follow the crowd, especially when the place is tucked in the residential neighborhood or off the track. We were succumbed to the large and seemingly inviting facade of Jia Shi Restaurant (家式饭店). The Chinese restaurant at Lembah Permai has never failed to attract a great crowd especially during weekends; the menu is huge and has everything that suits all age groups. The heat-intolerant can opt to dine-in at the fully air-conditioned room while those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance could opt to sit at the al-fresco dining area, facing the serene green park. The service is brisk and prices are reasonable, we'd definitely love to return more- be it a casual family dinner or for a special occasion (with the family).

Le Harlequin Restaurant

Harlequin Combo and Crab Combo are both the most-ordered meals here. The former one comes with a concoction of Clams, Mussels, Yabbies, Prawns, Sausages and Corns while the latter choice has Crabs, Sausages and Corns. Both were dressed in a spicy, sweet-savory sauce. Both possessed strong smokiness; the flavor-combo was attractive at first but we thought it was too monotonous towards the end. The boldly seasoned Seafood was too hefty on the palate. Seafood was fresh and the fact that Mud Crabs with Roe were served, we thought the prices were well-justified. Good for novelty experience but not the type of food that I would want to eat on a regular basis.

The F&B scene in Penang does not sound like it will be slowing down for the new year of 2017, there are quite a number of new restaurants to put on radar. Foodies may have noticed this eye-catchy building at the corner of Hutton Lane, right next to New World Park. The exterior of the restaurant is painted in orange color, with a few bright spotlights in action. The name "Green Bell" surely does not ring a bell... at least not for us. Green Bell has quite an extensive menu, offering a vast selection of Western-Fusion dishes, though most of them are priced reasonably, the dishes lacked the excitement when it comes to quality... as though it was just an ordinary restaurant in the neighborhood. Food-aside, the service on our visit was lackluster; for a few simple orders, it took them more than one hour to serve and the restaurant was not even half-full.

This is definitely one of the best Beef around.

Aqua Green Restaurant

Pearl Fish Farm, Off Pulau Jerejak, Penang (Gather Point at Batu Uban Fisherman's Village)

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2017-01-16 00:00:00+00:00
Dining in the middle of the sea is no longer a dream nor imaginary right now as one of the largest fish farms in Penang- Aqua Green runs a private kitchen that opens to the public. At a very reasonable price of Rm 120 nett per diner, diners will be welcomed with 5-6 course lunch (subject to availability) and the price includes return trip to the fish farm from Batu Uban Fishing Village. Food aside, we thought the real pull factor was the breath-taking scenery and once-in-a-life-time experience; I mean... how often do you get to visit a fish farm and have a healthy, home-cooked meal there? For those who are concerned, the fish farm is rather "stable" and not "wavy". The open-space dining hall welcomes soothing sea-breeze and offers spectacular view over the Sea (with a side facing Pulau Jerejak). Diners will also receive a complimentary tour around the fish farm while the owner- Sean Cheah, will explain to you how Aqua Green raises the fish. The meal will start shortly after the tour and shall include healthy dishes churned out from Sean's wife- Doris' kitchen; diners can expect at least a fish dish (farmed by Sean) and several healthy dishes (Doris only supports organic and sustainable farmers in Penang, she will cook whatever the farmers deliver to her on that day, subject to suitability). A minimum 6 pax is required for such booking to Aqua Green and preferably 7-day advance reservation (contact number can be found at the bottom of the article).

The prices for the meal start from RM120nett per person, and all in, we felt it is pretty reasonable for the private kitchen dining experience, ambience and transportation. The outlet which can sit 30 comfortably is only open for lunch on weekends, with a minimum requirement of six people. Dinner is available upon request.

Korean food in the Jelutong neighborhood might be a scarce for the past but not now with the opening of a new Korean joint- Sigsa Korean Restaurant, housed under the new commercial building- Straits Garden. The Korean restaurant serves classic Korean staples such as Barbecues, Hotpots, Stews, Tteokbokki, Korean Noodles and Rice dishes. It has the standard Korean restaurant setting meant for barbecue (sans the good ventilation system), cleverly covered in wooden furnishing. We did not get to sample a lot of their dishes but from what we had, they were of standard-average quality... nothing more and nothing less than an average Korean restaurant; but prices are slightly higher than average.

Gourmands residing in the neighborhood of Tanjung Bungah will not be new to the name- Hai Wei Seafood Restaurant. The well-established Chinese restaurant was previously housed under a low-cost flat in the vicinity but has since moved to Precinct 10. The place is known to churn out some of the best Claypot Crab Rice and Seafood dishes. The new place at Precinct 10 is huge and could easily accommodate more than 25 tables (a mix of big and small ones). The menu is pretty huge, with familiar Chinese stir-fry dishes suitable for both budget-watchers or those with deep-pockets. Though regular patrons would like to re-visit their favorite restaurant but the lackluster service tells them otherwise. The decade-old Cantonese Restaurant has quite a variety of dishes to offer- from the classic Cantonese stir fry to local-Malaysian cuisine; whether you are in a celebratory mood or just drop by over a casual meal, it has something for you.
