Soon, our two cups of hand pour coffee were ready and served. The beans were seasonal, so left it to the barista’s suggestion to recommend based on our tastebud preference. Me being fan of fruity and bright notes, while the partner in crime fancied a much bolder body whenever it comes to coffee.
When you have a group of two, it's harder to have a good variety of food when eating at Chinese restaurants. So with our group of four, it was a good time to go try out the food at Teo Soon Loong, a well-known Teochew restaurant in Malacca. It used to be in a tiny coffee shop on Jalan Hang Kasturi, just round the corner from Jalan Hang Jebat, but has shifted out of the Old Town to a newer, much larger restaurant in a newer part of the city (on the reclaimed land area).

Satay celup is a unique food experience that can only be found in Melaka. It involves dipping a skewered food of your choice into this boiling hot pot of spicy peanut sauce right in the center of the table. And today we’ll be visiting one of the most famous spots in Melaka for Satay Celup called Ban Lee Siang.
*The few must-have ingredients based on our experience: brown squid, fried tofu skin, kangkung, pork ball, bacon slice, and quail eggs.
Tips from 食 La Vie; parking will be an issue during peak hour so be patient in finding one. Do not visit this restaurant if you are someone who is very concerned of hygiene issue. If you are someone who favor satay, we have a post of Kajang’s satay here.

Ranked 2 out of 548 restaurants in Malacca, this place is the worst kept secret in Malacca. Despite its high rank and popularity, the place still exudes its unique style and provides all patrons with space to relax and enjoy a moment of tranquil peace from the usual bustling craze outside its doors.
It has been a while since we posted Melaka food so this is one of the recent restaurant we visited this year. This is one of the hidden gems that is not popular with tourists. Low Yong Moh Dim Sum Restaurant opened since 1947 and it is one of the oldest restaurants in Melaka. They are located at 32, Jalan Tokong Melaka and they open daily for breakfast except Tuesdays. Low Yong Moh is owned by the Hakka from Fui Chiew.
Parsley Pork Dumpling – overall same as siu mai but have a strong flavor of parsley within the minced pork, taste-wise is great but still hate the super dried texture.
Still, its still a decent place for some food and a light breakfast.

Once I knew I was heading to Melaka for a short trip, the first thing on my mind was Cendol1!! Jonker 88 was my favourite since the first time I went when I was 14 years old. *10 years ago, I'm old.*
Food ordering is self service here at Jonker 88. Before you order, you need to find a table first. Then you also need to bring the food to your own table. The food is prepared pretty fast so even if there is a long queue, it won’t be a long wait.
We ordered the Jumbo Baba Laksa, which cost a bomb (RM 10++). When I am at Malacca, I normally opt for curry laksa, the one with coconut milk, and not the one akin to asam laksa, with kembung fish and dark clear soup. I absolutely love their laksa! I love the soup for its creaminess but it's not full of fats kind of creaminess.
This place is way too popular, we came before the shop opened and was the first batch to went in. Service is great, food is good and the environment is nice. So it is popular for good reasons.

The pasta, which has spaghetti with mushroom, chicken ham and crunchy smoked duck topped with a poached egg and shaved parmesan, is delicious. The noodles are cooked al dente, giving them a nice bite, and the sauce is creamy without being overwhelming.
Pork Satay – Smoky rich filled with lemongrass flavor, have a balanced amount of meat and lard on the skewer, highly recommended.
When it comes to food in Melaka, there are two things Jien would absolutely, never share with me. The first being his favourite fried carrot cake and the other is pork satay. These are two Melaka staples that he would insist on eating whenever we’re there. We drove past Sun…
Is the Famous Putu Piring Tengkera Melaka worth the visit? It is definitely must visit and must try. Go early to avoid the long queue and RM 1.30 is worth it as you pay for quality food. The over 30 years old Putu Piring is well up to their reputation.
The Famous Putu Piring Melaka Jalan Tengkera
We had tried most of those Nyonya Kuih offered in Baba Charlie and honestly, it never fails to continuously astound in every aspect, just truly a pleasure while enjoying each one of them especially for ondeh-ondeh, Rempah Udang, Kuih Abu Sagu, and Pulut Seri Kaya, arghh still keep craving for more up till date.
Baba Charlie is an icon of Melaka that has been churning out delicious Peranakan / Nyonya kuihs since 1988. Although located further from the main city, it ...
We got a packet of the onde-onde (RM5.30 for 10 pieces)- this was our favourite of the lot as the balls were soft and bursting with gula melaka
I had the Mamee in Kuah Lodeh, which is the creamy, coconut-rich gravy that is usually served with lontong (compressed rice) – only they replaced it with noodles, of course! Portions were generous; there was plenty of shrimp and tofu to soak up the delicious broth, topped with half a boiled egg. The noodles were springy with a slight bite.
Cuppa noodle. Each cup is priced at RM5.20. You can choose between Chicken or Curry or Tom Yam flavor seasoning for your noodle later.
One of our first stops was Mamee Jonker House... who doesn't love the blue iconic Mamee Monster? Here, you will find a cafe (serving local food) and there is also a Merchandise area, Noodle Doodle area upstairs (where you can doodle on your noodle cup and watch it being packed) and a Lil Monster Kitchen (available weekends only) to see how Mamee Monster is made.
The satays here at Xiang Ji Satay House had a nice lean to fat ratio; they were tender, juicy and flavorful. I especially loved the pork satay, which comes with alternate chunks of meat and thin strips of fat. The fats were nicely crisp, as they get grilled over the hot charcoal embers.
The charcoal stove grilled pork skewers were spot on, well marinated with a cut of fat sandwiched in the middle that provide sufficient “moist” to the palate. I like the peanut sauce with appetizing hint of sourness (pineapple is added, I assumed again LOL) and would beat the Kajang satay’s peanut sauce.
Aiming for their pork satay, we were one of the very first customers to arrive. Eyeing on those well marinated pork chunks on the skewers being placed on burning charcoal stove with the right balance of lean meat and fats :)
Nadeje is a cake shop in Melaka famous for its mille crepe. I’ve heard about Nadeje many years back. Can’t believe I’ve taken over 7 years to try this cake!!! What’s a mille crepe? It’s a French cake made from many layers of crepe. The word mille means thousand which suggest the cake has many crepe …
So there I was at the original spot where I was told the mille crepe craze began. Dropping by the Nedeje Cake Shop at Plaza Mahkota Malacca one fine afternoon, it was indeed a very cozy spot to have some cakes.
Next, we have the Famosa Signature Steam Chicken (half portion) RM22.00 – Hainanese style steam chicken lightly drizzled with soy sauce, parsley and cucumber. The steam chicken is a huge success throughout this meal, succulent tender and juicy at each bite, as expected when they only use chicken meat from Bukit Mertajam, which is well-known for its free-range chicken! 😉
You’re probably familiar with chicken rice, a local specialty in Malaysia and Singapore, in which boiled or roasted chicken is served with chicken-infused rice, typically with chili sauce on the side. You might not be familiar with chicken rice balls, however (I certainly wasn’t until I came to Mela…
Service was quick and within 10 minutes, we were served. Our preference is chicken breast, hence the server suggested that we order 1/4 portion of steamed (RM10) and 1/4 portion of roasted (RM10), which would guarantee us getting the part that we want (and we get to try both types of meat). The chicken, sourced from Bukit Mertajam, was smooth and tender, and I particularly liked the steamed version. The portion is also generous.
