Admittedly, I frequent Johore Bahru quite often. And it came as a surprise when I told some friends and colleagues I was thinking of going to this seafood restaurant known as Todak, and many were aware of this place for the longest time!
After this, we went to Restoran Todak (Orang Asli) to have our dinner
Sambil duduk sambil lihat pemandngan laut. Seberang sana tu Singapura. Kalau waktu petang, kalau nasib korang baik, akan dapat lihat matahari terbenam, sangat cantik!.
Its a routine to order Satay from this stall every time during our visit and if you love Pork Satay, this is definitely recommended.
There are two dishes which I will want to highlight is the stall selling Claypot Chicken Rice. It is one of the best I tried in Malaysia, Johore. Small is RM7 and Big is RM15. Especially during peak hours, you will have to wait a little longer but good food, always worth the wait isn’t it. The moment it arrived, off the cover from the claypot and the fragrance of steam floating out was awesome! The combination of Chinese Sausages, Salted Fish, Chicken and the mixture of Black Sauce and Rice make gave it the perfect taste.
BBQ stingray and sotong are our favourite and must order even though I know I am not able to hold the sambal chilli well. It is spicy but delicious and the meat is tender and fresh. Grilled stingray and sotong - Rm42
Over the years, Kuang Fei Tangkak Beef Noodles had branched out, and operates in Melaka, Kuchai Lama and Puchong. Unlike this main store, the branches have more comprehensive menu which includes beef balls et cetera.
At RM8.00, the portion of the noodles was way too little for a town offering comparing to my favouriteTangkak Beef Noodle in Taman OUG which is RM8.50 for a small bowl, but having a meat portion that was much more than the one at Tangkak.
Taste: Broth was thick and yummy! Love it!

Hung Kitchen is a family oriented, budget friendly Western restaurant with unique kampung ambience.
Cheese and Ham Chicken Chop – grilled chicken with black pepper gravy and french fries served with coleslaw. The chicken was tasty especially with the black pepper sauce.
Total meal was RM22.00. Overall is a generous portion and wallet-friendly meal. The waiting time is less than 10 minutes and the foods served were still warm. As I observed, their gravies are pre-made and they just need to drizzle or pour over the foods according to customers’ order. Nevertheless, it is still a good bargain for a cheap meal, don’t you think so? I will be back for the affordable meal if I am back to JB.
Another delicious pasta choice is Spaghetti with tender pieces of Grilled Chicken Chop in Mushroom Sauce.
At RM55 net per person or RM110 net for two people, the solid set meals at the Amaya are really, quite a steal!
Festive Buffet Dinners at the Amaya Food Gallery will be served daily from Dec 16 to Jan 4, 2020 (except on Dec 24 and 31) from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. RM118 net per adult and 50% discount for children aged from six to 12 and seniors aged 60 and above.
Food aside, the interior of the restaurant is unique and delightful. It's just warm, welcoming and yet classy. Great for both family and friends.
Total bill was RM97.90 ~S$32.63 inclusive of 10% service charge.I would say there are hits and misses in terms of the food quality and price. Anyway, taste is based on individual preference. But one thing for sure, this place is quite attractive in terms of their interior space and the location. You can enjoy your savoury here and hop over to Vanilla Bean Café for their well-known hotcake dessert.
白天阳光透进落地窗洒入室内;夜晚对岸茫茫灯火与你相伴。室内环境以各式花卉与植物盆栽作为装饰摆设,营造自然浪漫情调,加上美食相伴,还在等什么?
4-Star (out of 5). If you are a fan of KL style wanton mee, you can get a good version of it at Jin Shan Lou 金山楼云吞面 in Impian Emas, Johor Bahru. 金山楼云吞面 make their own egg noodles and roast their own fatty cut char siew.
Yellow Corner is indeed a nice place for a simple delicious meal, and a good homely place to chill with family and friends. This is a local Kulai folk favourite.
RM4/ Plate Chicken is crispy and well-cooked.
I ordered their premium set which comes with a tasty Fried Chicken. Trust me on this. The chicken might look ordinary but the moment you taste it, wow, it was well seasoned and tasty. In my opinion, it was tastier than KFC and less oily and definitely healthier. It comes with a Poppadum Cracker and a Fried Egg. The fragrance of the rice is strong and when you dig into it, you will simply enjoy every single taste of it. Overall, the food presentation was neat and well decorated.
The fried chicken is marinated well and because it was served hot, the outer layer was very crispy but remained moist and juicy in the inside. The oil temperature was controlled well too, so the fried chicken is not oily at all.
干咖喱鸡和椰浆饭也搭配得宜,香料不会太呛或刺鼻,味道刚刚好。不过,要是有多一点酱汁就更好啦。
We continued with our leisurely meal, chit-chatting, and thoroughly enjoying the taste of an Australian brunch in Johor Baru.
Equipped with warm shades of pink and pastel coral interiors and filled with tons of lush greeneries, they first started this place with the concept of a casual eatery but has recently revamped their menu to more of a full-fledged café.
From the team that brought you People & Places comes Routine by Soon! I would describe this as an almost fast food-esque (in concept rather than quality, because I think it is still pretty tasty & healthy) version of the original restaurant, but it’s great if you want a quick bite.
I like the seafood and mushroom soup because of it's gentle savoury sweet flavour.
For diners’ convenience, they can just pick the Seafood Platter (RM38.90) which comprises prawns, clams, baby octopus and sliced abalone.
When the plate of pratha was set before me, I saw the poached eggs resting on a bed of roti, moving because they were still wobbly. The two eggs on the roti were reminiscent of Eggs Benedict ala Kerala Restaurant style, drizzled with whirls of lightly spiced curry instead of hollandaise sauce. He watched as I ate and wiped the plate clean of egg and curry with the small pieces of roti that were served torn.
To this day, Kerala Restaurant still serves a full banana-leaf rice meal for lunch while breads like dosai, idili and apam are mainly served for breakfast.
One of JB’s oldest Indian restaurants still serving traditional Kerala dishes on banana leaves. Home cooked style dishes with fresh ingredients and gently spicy aromatic flavourful spices.
Mee rebus. It was a comfort food that nicely warmed our stomachs
The gravy (kuah in Malay) is the soul of mee rebus. Haji Wahid’s gravy is subtly fragrant. Sometimes, I caught whiffs of the distinctive aroma of ground dried shrimps. Ground dried shrimp is a traditional ingredient that I seldom find in mee rebus stalls nowadays. Kudos to Haji Wahid’s for keeping to tradition.
Oriental Kopi - a coffee chain in Malaysia, famous for its egg tarts, that I didn’t know of until my sister posted about it on her Facebook ...
The custard bun was seriously molten, and the custard sponge cake really soft and spongy. The rest of the dim sum was quite serviceable too. Quite a good crowd here too.
Apart from sourcing for more fun places in Johor Bahru, we also try out various cuisine and bookmark our favourite makan hunts. Recently, we have added Spice Villa as one of our favourite spot whenever we crave for Indian Cuisine. Located within Holiday Villa Johor Bahru, opposite KSL City, it is convenient to drop by for lunch or dinner after completing our shopping trip.
I'm not a fan. I'm easy to please when it comes to aglio olio but this pasta tastes 'empty'. It has not much flavour except for MSG. Suffice to say, I wouldn't come here for main meals again. I have tried cakes at SDS before and they are passable. Not great but not terrible either.
FANPEKKA Cafe is SDS's 26th outlet offering bakery products and a wide variety of Asian, Fusion and Western dishes at an affordable price. Inspired by Finnish food, it launched new menu with more meatballs, salmon, potatoes and pies selections.
Housed in a shack, the restaurant is situated by the roadside and diners can have their meals al fresco-style. The menu (in Malay) can be found at the front of the restaurant, with offerings such as Laksa Johor, rojak, mee rebus, soto, cendol, ice jagung selasih and more.
The Laksa Johor (RM5.50) was excellent - spicy with a nice, thick fish broth. Laksa Johor usually comes with spaghetti noodles, but here, they use the short (white) laksa noodles instead.
Auntie Lilly is excited to share about my recent short trip to Tangkak, Johor. On our quest of 'Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan', we went on a food-hunting trip to look for the TANGKAK Roti Canai Terbang Ledang.
