I was happy to see pho (beef noodle soup - RM17.90) on the menu, as I have been craving for it for a while. The pho soup is made by boiling imported Australian beef with various spices and then topped with rice noodles, beansprouts, fresh herbs, red chillies, thinly sliced beef and beef balls. Squeeze some lime over and enjoy! I definitely enjoyed this - the soup was clear yet very flavorful and comforting. Absolutely pho-bulous!

Anyway, like I’ve mentioned, the food prices here are incredibly affordable – the most expensive item on the menu is at RM17.90 and for that, you get a steaming bowl of Vietnamese pho with tender Australian Ribeye. The beef broth for noodles has been boiled for hours, resulting in a robust broth brimming with sweet natural meaty goodness. Good quality Australian beef is used, hence the beef noodles are priced at RM12.90 & above per bowl.

If you can only try one noodle, get the Tuaran Mee Goreng. I’d also suggest that you order a drier version because it’s a tad moist as it is. What makes it worthwhile is the noodle itself which is known for its springy texture and eggy aroma. It can only be found in Sabah and had to be air-flown all the way here. And contrary to its name, it’s not exactly ‘goreng-ed’ as in stir fried. The noodle is actually simmered in sauce to let the flavors develop.

The real deal we discovered at the restaurant is the Hanoian Style Fish with Turmeric & Dill (RM 22.55). This specialty dish originated from Cha Ca La Vong Restaurant and was named by US's MSNBC as the 5th of top 10 places you must visit before dying, and is famous til the street it is located has been renamed after it! The fish is soft, flaky and unique on its texture. If we were to compare, we would say it was something like Unagi with a nice smoky flavor. The vermicelli, when topped with the soup, fish, peanuts and herbs gave a layering of dimension to enjoy.

As the name suggests, Pho King’s signature items are of course their pho – Vietnamese rice noodles in beef, pork or chicken broth. Only quality Australian beef and Sambanto pork are used in Pho King. Pho (between RM10.90 to RM21.90) is the main reason to eat at Pho King, as it’s probably the best in the neighborhood – maybe even in all of PJ. What makes it stand out is the quality of the meat and labor that go into preparing the delicious broth. Every bowl is topped with generous slices of Australian beef, cooked to your liking but medium rare is recommended for the best experience.

I wanted something other than pho that day so I opted for a traditional beef stew with a baguette. The baguette was baked really well that it was crispy on the outside but was soft and fluffy on the inside. Just right for moping up all that beef stew sauce. The beef chunks were nice and tender. I'd recommend this too.

Vietnamese Cuisine is gaining its popularity in Penang, especially with the influx of new Vietnamese joints. Tucked within the colonial architecture in the heart of Georgetown, Saigon Bowl is a new contender for Vietnamese food. It offers a series of modernized Vietnamese food with Pho being the star of the menu. The signage is not too obvious, with a small neon-light signage hanging in front of the restaurant. The facade does not give a very strong Vietnamese image but the interior suggests otherwise.... with Vietnamese knick-knack hanging around adorning the environment. In order to bring in more authentic flavors from Saigon, most ingredients are imported from its Mekong Delta counterparts. Budget-watchers would be glad to know that a bowl of Pho starts from Rm 9.90 onwards; it is also note-worthy that Saigon Bowl is possibly the only Pork-Free Vietnamese restaurant in Penang.

ÉNFD is an abbreviation of 'Énfold'- pronounced as 'unfold' with a meaning of 'gather and envelop' people through good food. It runs like a private kitchen, though walk-ins are welcome, the dining space is limited and could only host no more than 15 diners at a time. The dining hall preserves the sense of heritage with minimal interior decor; probably meant to encourage and enhance camaraderie amongst diners. It is a space that one could really talk and engage with each other. On the menu, the list of magical offering is unique and creatively crafted by the team behind ÉNFD; with focus on using Herbs and Spices ('local flavors') to intermingle with international flavors. The conservatives will find the menu too playful and to me, this is the attitude in lacking especially in the culinary scene in Penang. The brunch menu is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 3 pm.

My Personal Opinion From the few things we tried, I'd say the Vietnamese offerings here are below average tasting. The pho was pretty phogettable (unless you like subtle tasting broth). The crispy fried pork rolls were the only decent thing here but they weren't unphogettable either (ok, enough with the pun already)...kikiki! ;D Don't be deceived by the photos, the dishes don't look remotely like what you see in the menu. I can absolutely guarantee we won't be coming back....and you can take that to the bank! :P

Overall, the taste is absolutely unquestionably good. However, after you are looking at the price tag, you will feel it is not worth it at all. It is double the price compare with the price they are selling at Vietnam. Vietnamese cuisine is a peasant cuisine but it has been commercialized into an overpriced cuisine. They should continue to make this cuisine affordable so it won't lose the real value of it.

Central Georgetown is a real food hub with no shortages of International cuisine... and that includes Vietnamese food. The name Pho Viet certainly rings a bell... and we were right, their specialty- Vietnamese Pho. The place was previously known as Yellow Lips (at Beach Street) but has since taken over by a new Vietnamese team that offers a variety of Vietnamese delicacies. Prices are on the higher side (20-30% higher than other Vietnamese joints in town) but they have certainly delivered the quality; service was impeccable as well. Not only did they offer complimentary dessert but they try to explain every dish in great details (they politely advised me on the correct way of eating Vietnamese Pho). If price is not your concern, do give this place a try.

Like most Vietnamese Dishes, it is eaten with white rice and sides with the fresh or boiled vegetables. The highlights is of course the pork where the pork belly comes simply tender and with the falls of the bones texture.

GRILLED BEEF IN BAMBOO TUBE (MYR 38). Grilled tenderloin beef cube, capsicum and onion on skewer served in bamboo tube. This is one dish I would personally recommend. Not only each cube of meat is juicy and tender, it is also lightly but nicely seasoned with pepper to retain its original sweetness, thumbs up!

Lastly, the quintessential dish in almost all Vietnamese restaurants, the House Special Pho Bo (RM38) was generously loaded with beef slices, noodles, bouncy beef balls and accompanied with bean sprouts, herbs and lime wedges. The beef slices were quite soft and tender and the broth was quite good. Upon first sip, you can taste the intense flavours of the beef bones which had been boiled with for hours. It was flavourful and soothing at the same time.

Vietnamese cuisine is gaining its popularity recently, evidently seen from the numerous Vietnamese eats around Georgetown to compete in offering the best and authentic Vietnamese flavors to Penangites. Saigon House Cuisine is a new kid on the block, setting foot in one of the shop houses at Bahari Parade, Sri Bahari Road. Like most Vietnamese restaurant, Saigon House Cuisine has a bible-thick menu which features most of the classic and traditional Vietnamese eats. The atmosphere is comfortable for a casual meal or family dinner, with acceptable prices. Except the parking, Saigon House Cuisine can be a decent choice when it comes to Vietnamese food in Penang.

Pops and the Bro both had the Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with Rice (RM15.90), which came with a humongous chicken thigh. Loved the smoky, slightly charred exterior and the juicy chicken which was cooked to perfection – albeit, the lemongrass flavour was not very pronounced.
